Emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers in the presence of nanosilica for potential application in pressure-sensitive adhesives

Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are defined as multi-component polymers, containing acrylic acid esters which have been coated on a high mechanically resistant strip. In this study, a definite ratio of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/acrylic acid/methyl methacrylate (2-EHA/AA/MMA) was considered for the preparation of latexes via emulsion polymerization with applicability in PSAs. Particle size and morphological properties were studied by DLS, SEM and TEM analyses. Further investigations on the adhesion properties showed a considerable improvement in tack resistance for the nanocomposite films. 250% and 300% increase were obtained for the samples with 2 and 4 wt% of nanosilica, respectively. Also peel analysis results showed the appropriateness of the sample with 2 wt% of silica nanoparticles for this purpose.

The effects of an aliphatic reactive diluent on the viscosity, gel time, chemical resistance, mechanical properties, fracture toughness, microstructure and relaxations of two different epoxy resins, i.e., a bifunctional and a multifunctional epoxy, were investigated. The gel time was not significantly affected by the diluent. The modulus and ultimate strength gradually declined, while the ductility steadily increased as the diluent content was increased. The failure mode of epoxy samples under flexural test changed from brittle to much more ductile upon the progressive incorporation of diluent into the epoxy resins. The strain at break of bifunctional resin improved by 75%, while that of multifunctional resin enhanced by more than 24%. The physical and mechanical properties of blends composed of two kinds of epoxy resins of different numbers of functional groups and chemical structure were studied. One of the resins was a bifunctional epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and the other resin was a multifunctional epoxy novolac resin. Attempt was made to establish a correlation between the structure and the final properties of cured epoxy samples. The blend samples containing high fraction of multifunctional epoxy resin showed higher solvent resistance and lower flexural modulus compared with the blends containing high fraction of bifunctional epoxy resin. The epoxy blends showed significantly higher ductility under bending test than the neat epoxy samples. In this study, a definite ratio of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/acrylic acid/methyl methacrylate (2-EHA/AA/MMA) monomers was considered for the preparation of latexes through miniemulsion polymerization with applicability in pressure sensitive adhesives. Then latexes containing 0 to 4 wt% of nanosilica were prepared and their characteristics were studied. The presence of nanosilica particles in the final product was verified and its content was measured through ICP and TGA analyses. Particle size and morphological properties were studied by DLS, SEM and TEM analyses and finally rheological and adhesion properties of the samples were discussed. It was found that in the presence of nanosilica, larger particles ranging from 68 up to 152 nm with wider distribution were obtained.
